How are seals affecting fishing catches?
Are seals the fishermen's friends or foes? The UK is home 35% of the world’s grey seals and we know they like to get their flippers on many of the same fish as we do. So, how are seals impacting the fishing industry?
In our latest podcast, Dr Claire Tanner from the Department of Biology explores the unseen conflict beneath the waves and the complex dynamics between these marine mammals and fisheries.
Tune in to find out how understanding more about the behaviour of the UK’s seal populations can shape marine management policies.

Why am I killing my house plants?
Просмотров 4721 день назад
House plants can be a cheerful pop of colour in your home. But do you find after the initial burst of life, your plants start to fade, looking sad and unhealthy? M Garrido Davies, from the Department of Biology, shares top tips for helping house plants to flourish, starting with learning more about the biology of how plants grow in their natural environment. How are volcanoes formed on other planets?
Просмотров 186Месяц назад
Volcanoes are pretty amazing! But how do they work on other planets? Take Mars - it has the largest volcano in the solar system! But volcanologist Tamsin Mather reveals that the red planet is now considered geologically dead, with no volcanic activity for around 500 million years. How do we know how this volcano formed then? Well, space missions have put probes and landers on Mars’ surface, pro...
Can we talk to bees?
Просмотров 101Месяц назад
We are out in the wild today talking to bees! In this behind the scenes episode, we visited Dr Rachel Parkinson’s bee recording studio to see insect neuroscience research in action. You might know that honeybees communicate with each other using the waggle dance, a minute choreography that shows other bees the way to the flower buffet. But little is known about how bumblebees communicate. To un...
The magic of mangroves: defending the defenders
Просмотров 44 тыс.Месяц назад
Mangroves are very unusual plants. Their specialised prop roots form arches above ground, anchoring mangroves to the salty soil of shorelines and providing stability during high tide flooding. But while mangroves may look unusual, they provide an important ecosystem service. As natural coastal protectors, mangroves can slow down incoming waves and stabilise soil, reducing coastal erosion. But a...
Why are people obsessed with how cute cats are?
Просмотров 1992 месяца назад
Cats are pretty adorable! Those big eyes, fluffy paws and cheeky personalities mean that most people find felines cute. But what is the science behind this reaction? Neuroscientist Professor Morten Kringelbach reveals how special technology can track what happens to signals in the brain in response to sounds and images of babies and small animals. In just a seventh of a second, our brain decide...
Behind the scenes in the Fly Lab
Просмотров 2312 месяца назад
Across the world, many species are at risk of extinction because of climate change. But did you know that ectotherms, such as lizards and insects, are particularly vulnerable to rising temperatures? This is because ectotherms cannot regulate their own body temperatures, so, for example, an iguana basks in the morning sun to warm up and function throughout the day. With 99% of the world’s specie...
How freaked out should I be about bed bugs?
Просмотров 1402 месяца назад
You might have seen them in a hotel. You might have read about them in the news. Maybe you’ve seen them star in social media videos filmed on the London underground. But should we really be worried about bed bugs? The little critters evolved from feeding on bats and birds to humans thousands of years ago and were part of society for hundreds of years. But with the invention of synthetic pestici...
Pandemics: The Unanswered Questions

The Covid-19 pandemic was an unprecedented event that scientists are continuing to learn from. While researchers work to prevent a future outbreak, there are many aspects of the pandemic that the public remain curious about. How were vaccines developed so fast? What is the likelihood of a future pandemic? Why do so many viruses come from bats? In this video, PhD researchers from the Pandemic Sc...
When did we start kissing?
Просмотров 1183 месяца назад
Have you ever considered when kissing first started? Who, or what, first decided that this was a good way to show affection? Ancient historian, Troels Pank Arbøll, and hedgehog researcher, Sophie Lund Rasmussen, joined forces to attempt to find an answer. Cuneiform scripts, which are the world’s oldest written text, have the first mention of romantic kissing in a mythological narrative dating b...

Your immune system is the body’s defence mechanism against disease. But have you ever considered what the immune system actually looks like? Julia Salafranca, from the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology, studies the immune system under the microscope. There are many different types of cells that help to keep you healthy, including neutrophils which kickstart the immune response. These specialist...

We spoke to Dr Brenda Boardman from the Environmental Change Institute about the best ways to keep out the winter chill. Did you know that draughts not only let cold air in, but they also push the warm out of your home? And that sitting or sleeping next to external walls can make you colder? Discover simple and i...
How will climate change affect wine?

People have been interested in wine growing and quality vintages since the Roman times, but as the climate warms, what does this mean for the future of wine growers in the UK (and beyond)? Andrew Wood, from the Department of Biology, has been studying the records of wine critics, which reveal much more than whether the bottle is a good vintage or not. The vintage can tell scientists what the gr...
The importance of sleep
Просмотров 4984 месяца назад
We spend one-third of our lives asleep. But while we drift off into the land of dreams, our brains are very busy. Nerves within the brain are constantly creating new proteins, with each protein having a specific function. But these proteins only do their job properly if they are folded correctly - a bit like a paper aeroplane only flies well if you fold it a certain way. Atreyi Chakrabarty, fro...

This was a wonderful video, and so many more people need to see it! 😍 At the end of January I was lucky enough* to see a presentation and watch a video with the latest update on this mission (filmed last summer, I believe), and it was so fascinating and inspiring that it's become one of those conservation examples tucked away in my mind that I want to talk about whenever the topic of where I work comes up, or of conservation and biodiversity in general! At the time, I don't think the research had been fully published so it's an example I'm keeping in reserve until I know I can talk about it ☺ * (I work at #ZSL, though in IT!)

may i suggest the Reverse Wag? ☕️ you pitch back with the cup as you step forward, and vice versa in sync with the gait of your walk. like any music or rhythmic skill, takes a lil practice. 🍃 i also tend to cary cup with hand over the whole top to bear the cup from the above, which makes this maneuver easier than always computing the pitch relative to an up-angle when you hold it asymmetrically in front of you.

Resonance of the swing is actually obtained if you push it when it is speeding very fast at the bottom of the arc. This is because if you use your force to push it when a large distance is travelled you are doing more work, which yields a larger e increase in the total mechanical energy of the swing.

I use the claw grip a lot. I once had a coworker who fashioned a small wooden platform with strings attached at each corner and tied together at the top. He would carry his coffee on the platform, suspended by the strings. The resonant frequency of the resulting pendulum was, no doubt, something other than that of the coffee in the cup.

So nothing to do with EMR then? What happened to our bees in the Isle of White 1904? What effect did the roll out of cell phone base stations/cell phone towers do to bee colonies from 2003 onwards? Why do house sparrows only exist in little tribes in EMR cold spots in suburbia now? And are no longer present on houses outside of the breeding months? Mmm. Tricky. But some scientists have been filing papers. But no one cares overall. Buckle up cos this rides gonna get wild!
